In this role, you will be part of a team of engineers, toolmakers, and technicians whose mission is to lead the introduction of new products (NPI), Productivity, and support continuous improvement of existing product lines.
The successful candidate will work within the constraints of budget, schedule, and scope while managing risk and ensuring adherence to established processes and methodologies. The candidate will also be responsible for NPI tool de-bugging, process and technology development and tool validation, as well as supporting other engineers on projects as an injection molding and process development subject matter expert.
Initiate and lead strategic plastics molding projects with NPI Teams, Advanced Manufacturing Engineers, and Productivity Leaders at the earliest possible stage using established and appropriate or defined engineering principles and procedures
Define technological developments which influence the requirements of Industrial Solutions products
Be a technical expert in molding methods: injection, compression, mold-flow process, tooling DFM
Partner with leading universities, government agencies and laboratories to support applied research in resin material technology
Manage R&D and Productivity projects for timing, resources, and budget to present at both technical and executive reviews
Uses Lean techniques to determine process standards and technology required to meet the quality and reliability objectives of finished product
Applies statistical methods and mathematical calculations to determine manufacturing processes, staff requirements, and production standards
Visit and evaluate global GE plants that plastic molding processes
Develop an in depth understanding of current technology in use
Identify strengths and weaknesses with existing process to develop global plastic molding strategy
Promote safety, environmental responsibility and continuous quality improvement in accordance with company policies.
Manage the development, maintenance, and documentation of plastic molding processes and procedures in accordance with industry codes and product requirements
Interpret technical requirements and ensure compliance with materials codes, regulations, and customer specifications.
Assist in reviewing all new product CAD models, plastic molding requirements
Conduct investigations to determine root cause of molding failure/non-conformance and prepare results report to resolve quality issues
Prepare instructional material and conduct training on various plastic and molding subject matter
Ensure qualification of process tech and molding processes and procedures, and technology. Support coordination and planning of engineering and plant training
Support the continued use and expansion of additive manufacturing
Develops plastics molding procedures and approves vendor submitted procedures
Identify funding requirements for annual budget process
Keep up to date with latest technology in Industry and Academia
Identify and understand supplier capability (strengths and weaknesses)
Attend and represent GE at industry conferences
Works with design engineering and project management to ensure the moldability of product components for manufacturing assembly and product performance
Customer focused, formulates plans based on the development of innovative new designs in resolving advanced technical engineering problems
Work closely with business teams to identify and prioritize product lines that need cost or performance improvement
Partner with global plants to improve process reliability, product throughput and quality
Monitor the results to insure the new system/technology is meeting the objectives
Look for ways to globalize successful implementation across the business and share ideas with the global team
Demonstrates an extensive technical expertise and application of engineering principles, concepts, and theory
B.S. Engineering (Plastics, Materials, Mechanical)
Significant relevant industry experience
Experience in design for plastics injection-mold fabrication processes
Strong knowledge in Scientific Molding and analysis tools including Moldflow
3D modeling (Pro E or Creo preferred) hands on experience
Knowledge of the plastics molecular structure and the polimerization process either in thermoplastics or in thermosets and use of analysis software (Moldflow)
Experience and understanding of the development and design of plastic parts, insert molded parts, and assemblies
Project management skills including: budget planning and tracking, schedule and change management, statistics and application to manufacturing processes including statistical process control (SPC) and design of experiments (DOE)
Must be able to lift 50 lbs. un-assisted
M.S. In Engineering (Plastics, Chemical / Materials, Mechanical)
RJG Master Molder II certification
Experience and understanding of de-coupled injection molding and structured process development
Extensive experience with plastics molding technology and methods. Possess an understanding of plastic molding design and process applications
Ability to lead lab activities relating to material and molding characterization, mechanical, microstructural, etc. With the ability to understand and interpret complex testing data pertaining to R&D projects and failure characterization
PLC programming knowledge
Excellent communication and presentation skills
Lean Principles (Kaizen Events and 5S)
