For our Ócsa Plant we are looking for an

  • ASSISTANT BREEDER , Tomato (Ócsa, Hungary) *


This position represents a development position for an Assistant Breeder with the leadership and technical capacity to support a breeding program according to the instructions from the Breeding Project Lead.

The Assistant Breeder is the referent contact for operational platforms (greenhouse farm team, molecular laboratory, pathology laboratory, seed technology laboratory, biochemistry laboratory) on the site where Assistant Breeder located. The Assistant Breeder

• Executes the breeding plans with excellence in collaboration with relevant execution teams

• Secures the quality of data collection, administration and archiving around the projects e.g. in SPIRIT (breeding data) and in PMD (variety administration data)

• Is in charge of a part of trialing administration

• Secures the quality process for all of his/her activities in respect of ISO standard

• Manages seed productions, seed stocks, seed health, seed transfer & traceability related to the projects

• Supports trialing activities in collaboration with BPL’s and Product Selection Leads / Field Scientists

• Assists Supply Chain in getting all data relevant for seed production

• The position is a part of the tomato development team. The role requires the basic knowledge to interact with other members as pathologists, plant physiologists, statisticians, biometrician, and molecular marker specialists

• The Assistant Breeder participates in company Health, Safety, Environmental initiatives


• Assists the Breeding Process Lead effectively

• Good knowledge of market request, product profiles and breeding targets

• Provide BPL information about market requests and variety performance

• Secure crop process from sowing to harvest according information from BPL: planning, request, sowing list, plantation list, organize pollination plan, harvest list, seed health prevention measures. (only for trials runs on the site where Assistant Breeder is located)

• Collaboration with operations through timely planning and clear guidance

• Secure Marker assisted selection: box plan, sampling, information to MM lab, MIPS tool use for plant selection, plant selection, labeling

• Conducting plant pre-selection e.g. young plants before planting, according to BPL guidelines.

• Routine data collection in the trials and administration in SPIRIT program

• Prototype trials data collection and observation. Prescreening: pre-selection and reporting according BPL guidelines

• Organize prototype testing according BPL guidelines

• Manage seed productions and seed stocks

• Secure seed logistic and seed transfer according to internal rules in collaboration with operations

• Facilitate transfer of products (5 to 6) to production & marketing department: filling PMD, product description, organizes resistance testing, registration lots….

• Keep informed about new technologies and techniques in the area of responsibility

• Implement new and apply supporting technologies in breeding program

• Assist in development of IP position

• Completion of data packages to S&M and Supply Chain

• Reactivity and pro-activity for problem reporting.


• BSC degree as a minimum in any plant science (like agriculture or horticulture) preferably breeding

• 1-2 year work experience in a similar role

• Basic knowledge of plant genetics and breeding

• Basic knowledge of plant pathology

• Basic knowledge of statistics and trial design

• Medium level of English both in written and spoken


• High attention to details and consistency in performance

• Good Team player

• Ability to multitask

• Strong motivation towards working with plants

• Ability to use computer and to work disciplined with database management

• Good planner but also a good stress manager

• Ability to work in field and greenhouse environment
